Scholarship and studentship fund of PUAAN
One of the objectives embodied in the constitution of Peradeniya University Alumni Association of NSW (PUAAN) is to promote and reward academic excellence and help disadvantaged undergraduate students at the University of Peradeniya. To this end, PUAAN has utilised its funds to establish a scholarship and studentship fund which is administered and operated by the parent alumni association, the Alumni Association of the University of Peradeniya (AAUP) in Sri Lanka.
Current Structure of Scholarships and studentships
Our Association has made direct deposits of approximately AUD 6000 in the Scholarship Fund of PUAAN (administered by AAUP) in Sri Lanka and the interest is used to award scholarships and studentships. The recommendations for awards are obtained from the Vice Chancellor and the Deans of the relevant Faculties.
- Six scholarships to the value of SLRs 10,000 each for the first and second best performers at the First Year examinations
- Five Studentship awards to the value of SLRs 6000 each for economically disadvantaged students in the University
The goal of the Association is to provide funds to award one scholarship and one studentship, annually to each of the eight faculties of the University of Peradeniya.
Books Donation Program
One of the primary objectives of the Association is to promote among the membership in NSW, an interest in the affairs and wellbeing of the University of Peradeniya. In this connection, PUAAN initiated a program to provide some of the much-needed textbooks to libraries across the University. In 2010, the vice Chancellor of the University provided a list of books required by the different Faculties and PUAAN on its part requested the membership to contribute towards a fund to purchase the required books. In this project, a sum of A$1000 was transferred to the Alumni Association of the University of Peradeniya (AAUP), the parent body, for purchasing of text books in Sri Lanka. Purchasing of books in Sri Lanka has the advantage of much lower costs and savings on freight charges.
In 2011, PUAAN funded the shipment of a consignment of textbooks from a donor in Australia to the University Library. In 2012, members were requested to provide technical books (from all fields of science, arts and commerce) from their home libraries or otherwise and this enabled the collection of over 600 books which were also shipped to the University. The PUAAN facilitated the collection and shipping of the textbooks. The AAUP arranged custom clearance and the delivery of the books to the University. The University authorities gratefully acknowledged this donation. The book donation program is an ongoing project of the Association.
